South African Fashion Week- S/S '10/'11

Bianca Warren

Ephymol

Diamond Face Couture

Loxion Kulca

As much as I love Lagerfeld, Prada, Gucci and Lanvin, I have to pay homage to South African design talent. Now, South Africa may not have a booming high-fashion industry, and South African fashion does not have billions behind it like its American or European counterparts, but the South African fashion industry is growing.
South African Fashion Week took place recently from the 25th to the 27th of March at the Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg. 33 Spring/Summer 2010/2011 collections were shown to the media, fashion followers, bloggers and 'wannabe' fashionistas. The collections this time around were not as exciting as the last, but I did have a couple of favoutites. I loved Bianca Warren's playful frocks and Diamond Face Couture's glittering evening dresses. I also liked Loxion Kulca's showing. How would I describe the whole event? Not incredible, or mesmerising. Just okay...

You have to be kidding me, even Loxion Kulcha showcased a range...? This is truly momentous. SA is really making strides. You know there are certain things I believe in: that 10 years from now we will not be listening to American hip hop but we'll be listening to African/ SA hip hop. For the simple fact that we are really putting in work and nobody can hold us down. This is the one thing I came away with after seeing pieces from Audi Joburg FW. Practical, relevant and pragmatic.

Well done SA fashion designers.
