Getting ready for Joburg fashion Week

Joburg Fashion Week 2011 Behind the Scenes from African Fashion International on Vimeo.

In preparation for African Fashion International‘s Joburg Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2011, here is the behind the scenes video of the campaign shoot. The campaign, which was shot in and around Johannesburg in November 2010, showcases the amazing locations that the various fashion shows will be staged at. Joburg Fashion Week takes place from the 15th to the 19th of February. I will most definitely be there!

Soon... J&B Met 2011 coverage

So I promised incredible coverage of this past weekend's J&B Met and it is in the works - I've still got so many pictures to upload and packing to do. All I can say for now is that it was amazing! J&B knows how to throw a real party.

I'll admit I was a little distracted by the fashion and partying going on at the J&B Marquee (and the J&B I'd been leisurely sipping all day...), but I did manage to watch the main race. Afterall, people come to the Met for the horses, right?

I did expect a bit more adventurous dressing from the celebrities though. Apart from a few (the usual fashionistas like Bonang Matheba, Uyanda Mbuli and Jen Su), the Larger Than Life theme and the playful extravagance it allowed, was not sartorially exploited.

'Til later, here's my view of Table Mountain from the beautiful Pepper Club Hotel I stayed at, and a little teaser of my Met ensemble by the lovely Jamakazi...

'Gangs of New York'

US Vogue February 2011 + 35 fashion models + Mario Testino behind the lens + Grace Coddington doing the styling = an epic editorial. “Seven designers marked their territories for spring, from romantic Victorian to 1970s gloss, class sportswear to clean minimalism.  All collections were distinct and distinctly American”. It is definitely one of my all time favourite Vogue editorials - so, so chic. Enough said.

J&B Met 2011 - ready, steady...

The weekend is finally near and so the 2011 J&B Met is upon us. I cannot wait for all the fashion, the parties, the gorgeous thoroughbreds, Fedde Le Grand and the overall glamour of the event - every fashionistas dream. All roads lead to Cape Town for South africa's most popular horseracing event and the Summer's premier party. Pics to follow!

This Christian Louboutin Spring/Summer '11 Look Book by Khuong Nguyen proves that not only are Louboutin's (or Chrissy Loubs, as I like to call them) luxurious and super-stylish, they also are simply works of art. It's beautiful, fun and absolutely keeps with the times. What can I say, I'm still a sucker for the red sole...

Fashion introspection #5

Fashion illustrators are amazingly talented people. I am in complete awe of their work. This is a selection my current favourites - French illustrator Aurore de La Morinerie, as well as Igor + André.

'The new glamour'

With all the gloomy weather in Joburg of late, anything remotely sunny and Summery absolutely tickles fancy. Harper’s Bazaar US’ February issue does just that with this editorial featuring Danish beauty
Gertrud Hegelund. Shot by Tom Munro, Gertrud sizzles in some super sleek looks from some of my favourite designers - Givenchy, Versace, Gucci and Burberry, just to name a few. J'adore!

Going larger than life with the J&B Met

ONE BIG PARTY: Revellers at last year's J&B Met

"Larger Than Life" is this year's J&B Met theme and what a perfect theme it is for an event known for its extravagance, sophistication and über-chic crowd.

I'm a Met virgin myself, so when I think J&B Met, all I think about is the glamour and elegance, the many fashion faux pas, tons of celebrities, wannabe fashionistas, horses and very few parched people, what with the J&B that will be flowing all day long.

But it's not as simple as that.

Afterall, the J&B Met is in its 34th year running and taking place in Cape Town on the 29th of January this year, it is the country's largest annual outdoor social event.

What's more, as Race Seven of the top ten races on raceday, the Met is blocked out in almost all race-lovers diaries, as they watch 16 of South Africa's best horses compete for a share of R2,5 million.

So seeing as I'll be one of the lucky 50 000 people at this year's event sashaying around the Kenilworth Racecourse in my custom-made gown, I bring you my list of the J&B Met's top attractions.

The fashion

FASHIONISTAS ABOUND
: Every year, the Met brings together South Africa's finest fashionistas

Many of South Africa's hippest fashion designers work tirelessly to create outstanding Met ensembles for the country's glitterati. Unsurprisingly, some designers have even been known to create specific Met ranges (the drama).

Since bold is the buzzword this year, with the theme calling on massive outfits and oversized accessories, I expect to see super stylish, over-the-top outfits and also some devilish Lady Gaga attires (those at risk, take heed - only Gaga can wear certain outfits). I swear, Joan Rivers would have a field day with some of the outrageous outfits people wear.

The prize

Then, of course, I cannot wait for the highly-anticipated J&B Most Elegant Couple Competition hosted by eTV's news anchor James Lennon at 15h05.

The first prize includes, amongst others, a R25 000 Seekers travel voucher (I die!), while the other prizes include jewellery, sunglasses and Cavendish Square gift vouchers. And you know us fashionistas, we love free stuff. I trust this years judges Ryk Neethling, Michael Mol, Jo-Ann Strauss, Roxy Louw, Jeannie D and the YFM twins, Hlelo and Ntanda Masina will do a stellar job.

There is so much to look forward to and still so much shopping on my part to be done. (I also hear Fedde Le Grand - the Dutch DJ famous for the house single "Put Your hands Up 4 Detroit" - will also be rocking the official J&B Met afterparty). More deets will come on my J&B Met experience. Until then, for more information on the Met, click here.

Accessories galore

One of the tenets of great style is choosing the right outfit for your body - honestly, some outfits look best on a particular kind of body. Another essential part of great style is choosing the perfect accessories to complete and match your ensemble. We all know how the wrong pair of shoes or bag can really spoil an attire.

So here are some of my favourite accessories for Spring 2011 that I reckon could enhance just about any outfit -
Gucci
